My mother has told a story more than once about one of my aunts...her sister...who presented this very dessert quite seriously once at a family gathering. My stoic grandmother, who was very old school and arrived in this country from Poland when she was 12 years old, took one look at it and bust out laughing.
Believe it or not, this "salad" is from the 1957 "Betty Crocker's Cookbook for Boys and Girls." I actually found it through another blog and was very surprised to see that none of the 19 comments mentioned the obvious phallic likeness nor the irony of the cherry on top. Plus the fact that this is meant to be eaten...OK, I'll stop. I've obviously inherited my grandmother's dirty mind. The little spaceman in the graphic must be hiding a secret because he seems all too happy to be looking at this "rocket."
Here's another one from the same cookbook...I mean, c'mon, what were the editors thinking? In my opinion the tomatoes are set in the wrong place, but that's just me. Maybe I should come up with a "Phallic Fun with Food" cookbook. Something tells me Julia Child would've gotten a kick out of these.
